Recap: First Friday Social at Cuscaden Park Drew 40 Players

Last Friday evening, 40 players showed up to Cuscaden Park for what turned out to be one of the best community tennis events Tampa has seen in a while.

The First Friday Social was organized by a group of local players who wanted to create a low-key, welcoming way for people to meet others and get on court. No entry fee, no tournament brackets, just open doubles play and good company.

How it worked

Players signed in and were randomly paired for doubles matches. Every 30 minutes, partners rotated so everyone got to play with different people. There was no skill-level gating — beginners played alongside 4.0 players, and the emphasis was on having fun rather than keeping score.

A few local regulars brought coolers with water and snacks. Someone set up a portable speaker. By 7pm, all four courts were full and a small crowd had gathered to watch and wait for the next rotation.

Who showed up

The mix was encouraging. College students, retirees, parents who had not picked up a racquet in years, and competitive league players all found common ground. Several people mentioned they had been wanting to play but did not know anyone in the area.

That is exactly the kind of problem these socials are meant to solve.

What players said

"I moved to Tampa six months ago and have been looking for people to play with. This was exactly what I needed." — Sarah, 3.0 player

"The vibe was perfect. No pressure, just tennis and meeting new people." — Marcus, 4.5 player

"My daughter and I came together. She is 14 and was nervous, but everyone was so welcoming. We are definitely coming back." — Jennifer

Next steps

The organizers plan to make this a monthly event at Cuscaden Park, with the next one scheduled for the first Friday in May. They are also exploring adding a pickleball rotation for players interested in both sports.

If you want to stay in the loop on community events like this, keep an eye on the community feed. And if you are organizing something in the Tampa Bay area, we would love to help get the word out.
