Al Lopez Park Courts Get a Fresh Surface This Spring

Al Lopez Park Courts Get a Fresh Surface This Spring

The six hard courts at Al Lopez Park in Tampa are getting a well-deserved refresh. The City of Tampa Parks Department confirmed that resurfacing work will begin in mid-April and is expected to wrap up by early May.

What is happening

All six courts will receive a full acrylic resurface, including new line striping and net post anchors. The existing surface had developed cracks and uneven patches over the past few seasons, something regulars at Al Lopez have been noting for a while.

Timeline and closures

  • April 14 - April 28: Courts 1-3 closed for resurfacing
  • April 28 - May 12: Courts 4-6 closed for resurfacing
  • May 12: All courts reopen with new surface

The city is staggering the work so that three courts remain available throughout the process.

Where to play in the meantime

If your regular session is at Al Lopez, a few nearby alternatives worth checking:

  • Cuscaden Park (1.8 miles) — 4 lit hard courts, usually available weekday mornings
  • Davis Islands Tennis Center (3.2 miles) — 8 courts with lights, reservation system
  • Bayshore Athletic Complex (4.1 miles) — 6 courts, open play evenings

You can find availability and directions for all of these on the court map.

Why this matters

Court maintenance is one of those things that is easy to overlook until it directly affects your game. Cracked surfaces increase injury risk and make for unpredictable bounces. A fresh resurface means better footing, truer ball response, and courts that will hold up for years to come.

We will update this post if the timeline changes. If you spot any courts around Tampa Bay that need attention, you can flag them through the court detail page on the map.
